2004 Tsunami

2004: A tsunami causes horrific devastation in the Indian Ocean region. In Thailand, between 60 and 70 percent of all shrimp farms in six provinces along Thailand’s Andaman coast suffer severe damage, and coastal communities suffer great loses.

A UN report “In the Frontline” (2006) later details the role of mangroves in mitigating natural disasters. The report claims that a dense mangrove belt “would be sufficient to reduce the flow pressure from a tsunami by as much as 90 percent.”
